How to Dermaplane - step by step

The Dermaplaner razor is a versatile tool that serves both to remove facial hair and to exfoliate the skin. By stimulating skin cell turnover, it enhances the absorption of skincare products, resulting in a smooth, radiant complexion that serves as an excellent canvas for makeup. Despite its seemingly miraculous benefits, this proven technique has been in use for many years, making it a skincare tip worth exploring.

Here's a step-by-step guide:

  1. Prepare your skin:
Before starting, ensure your skin is properly prepared. Avoid sun exposure for at least 24 hours beforehand, as it can increase sensitivity. Also, refrain from using chemical exfoliants like glycolic or salicylic acid for several days prior. If you use retinoids, decrease usage for about a week before dermaplaning to minimize skin sensitivity.

  2. Start with clean skin:
Use a gentle cleanser to thoroughly cleanse your face, ensuring it's free from dirt, oil, and makeup residue. This step also helps to soften hair follicles before shaving.

  3. Apply face oil:
Put a small amount of face oil or moisturizer on the area you're going to shave. This provides additional glide, facilitating smooth razor movement. Alternatively, you can use the razor dry if preferred.

  4. Hold the razor correctly:
Angle the razor at 45° and start at the top of your face near the hairline, moving downward. Use short, downward strokes following the direction of hair growth. Maintain a light touch and avoid going over the same area multiple times to prevent skin irritation.

  5. Be cautious around sensitive areas:
Take extra care around eyebrows, lips, and nose. Use gentle strokes and avoid shaving over broken or irritated skin.

  6. Clean the razor:
After each use, rinse the razor with warm water and disinfect it with rubbing alcohol-soaked cotton to prevent bacterial buildup on the blade.

  7. Moisturize:
Following dermaplaning, apply a nourishing serum or moisturizer to soothe and hydrate the skin, maintaining its dewy appearance.

  8. Replace the blade regularly:
Remember to change the blade after 3-5 uses to ensure optimal performance and hygiene.
